Steven M. Haffner, MD, is Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Epidemiology, at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio.

Dr Haffner received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, New York, and his master of public health degree in epidemiology from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Dr Haffner is principal investigator for the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS), the Diabetes Primary Prevention Project (DPPP), and the Study of Health Outcomes in Weight loss (SHOW), and chairs the Cardiovascular Events Committee for the Reduction of Endpoints in patients with NIDDM with the Angiotensin II Antagonist Losartan (RENAAL) study. Dr Haffner serves on the Rosiglitazone Advisory Board, as well as the Data Safety and Monitoring Board of the Treating to New Targets (TNT) secondary prevention atorvastatin trial. He is also a consultant to the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III on diabetes.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association's Council on Epidemiology, Dr Haffner is also a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research, the Endocrine Society, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the American Diabetes Association, which gave him the 1997 Kelly West Award. He holds honorary memberships in the Slovak Diabetes Association, the Argentine Diabetes Association, and the Austrian Diabetes Association.

Dr Haffner serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and is the author or coauthor of more than 450 articles, book chapters, reviews, editorials, and abstracts.
