William B. White, MD, is Professor in the Department of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology in the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington. In addition, he is lead physician for the hypertension and vascular diseases faculty practice in the Cardiology Center at the John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington and a consulting physician in hypertension and vascular diseases at the Newington Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Newington, Connecticut, the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, and the St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. Dr White is the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
After receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Dr White completed his residency and chief residency at the University of Connecticut Consortium Hospitals in Hartford. He also completed a research fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacology at the University of Bergen in Norway. He is US board certified in both internal medicine and clinical pharmacology and is a certified clinical hypertension specialist through the American Society of Hypertension.
Dr White is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association, and the International Society for Hypertension in Blacks and a charter member of the American Society of Hypertension. He is also Chair of the study section for the Catherine and Patrick Donaghue Medical Research Foundation in Hartford.
Dr White has a longstanding interest in clinical hypertension and pharmacology, particularly in the areas of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, clinical trials of antihypertensive drugs, and the impact of COX-2 inhibitors in cardiovascular disorders. In 1981, he founded a hypertension unit at the University of Connecticut Health Center that included a faculty consultant practice as well as a clinical trials unit. He is the author or co-author of over 300 articles and book chapters in the field of hypertension and clinical pharmacology. Dr White recently published the books, Blood Pressure Monitoring in Cardiovascular Medicine and Therapeutics and Hypertension and Related Disorders.
In 1996, Dr White developed the peer-reviewed, international journal Blood Pressure Monitoring, which is devoted to original research in the area of blood pressure measurement and variability. He also serves on numerous editorial boards, including the American Journal of Hypertension, American Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Ethnicity and Diseases, Journal of Human Hypertension, Journal of Clinical Hypertension, and Hypertension.
