Sidney C. Smith, Jr, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Science and Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to assuming his present position, Dr Smith was Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and Director of the San Diego Cardiac Center at Sharp Healthcare. He was also Director of the Cardiovascular Laboratories while at the University of Colorado and Chief of Cardiology at the University of North Carolina.
After receiving his medical degree from Yale University, Dr Smith completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Harvard Medical School, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr Smith serves as Chairman of the World Heart Forum and is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Heart Federation. He is Vice President of the Inter American Society of Cardiology. Between 2001 and 2003, Dr Smith served as the first Chief Science Officer of the American Heart Association (AHA). He is former national President of AHA (1995-1996); Dr Smith's service with the organization spans two decades and includes work at all levels with three different AHA affiliates. He has served on a number of national committees with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and has been active in the development of ACC/AHA Practice Guidelines. Currently, he is Vice-Chair of the ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines and he chairs the ACC/AHA Committee to Revise the Guidelines for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.
His research focus has been on lipoprotein abnormalities, reperfusion therapies for acute myocardial infarction, and medical management of unstable angina pectoris. Currently, Dr Smith is evaluating the role of primary and secondary prevention efforts in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. He is a primary author of the Principles for National and Regional Guidelines on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and is active at the international level in the development and implementation of programs to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Dr Smith has received numerous awards from the AHA, including 1993 Physician of the Year Award, 1996 Distinguished National Leadership Award, and the 2000 Gold Heart Award. In 2003, he received the Eugene Drake Award for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine and an Award of Special Recognition from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health.
Dr Smith has served as a member of various editorial boards, including the Journal of Interventional Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Journal, and of the Medical Advisory Board for the Time-Life Medical Series. He is the author of more than 200 articles and book chapters and presents regularly at scientific meetings and guest lectures.
